The hills, Methuselah, and Mommy

The youngest asked what purpose these strange thingamabobs at Thruway served.

I explained the concept of pay phones to him, told how my mother used to make sure I always had "emergency coins" on my person at all times, then gave the the children a pop culture reference by singing - badly, loudly, and ├╝ber-twangily, natch - the ever classic, Here's A Quarter, Call Someone Who Cares.

Only when I leaned toward the payphone, I realized rates have gone up substantially since the last time I actually used one (International Terminal, JFK, December 1992, with a calling card, as best I recall).
