On Fourths of long ago

In Maine, Fourths were celebrated with a parade through our tiny community in the afternoon followed by a lobster cookout on the cove in the evening. Everyone attended both events, and so it felt not unlike a big family party. Were we seasonal neighbors or cousins? When the sun began to go down, the children would be given sparklers, and we'd wave them in the air trying to write our names or draw stars. Then when the only light left was from the fires, we'd all gaze out at the water, where Mr. Libby and Mr. Brown would from their boats set off fireworks that were mirrored in the cool, dark water of the Atlantic.

Happy Fourth of July, everyone.
