This afternoon the oldest commented that today would have been a hard day for "those people who came before". When I asked whom he meant, he said, "Not Old Salem. The other place."
Summer before last I took the boys to Bethabara on a day the humidity was so thick it felt like we were walking through a bath house. Later that night when we spoke about what we'd seen, the oldest observed that he couldn't imagine having to work in a garden in that air. That was what made an impact on him - how the Moravians couldn't escape from the weather very much.
It is also a very visually striking place, even today in 33 degree drizzle.
